Travellers going to Madagascar require a visa.
Short-term visas (three months or less) may be obtained either
at the airport or port of entry
or one of the following locations in the US:
Outside the US:
Write or call to obtain an application form, then mail (or make an
appointment to bring to the Consulate):
- Your passport (check the expiry: the passport must remain valid during
your trip; check that there is at least one free page to appose the visa).
- The form completed and signed.
- A passport photograph.
- A copy of your round-trip ticket, or a letter from a travel agency or
ticket office stating that you will have a round-trip ticket, or a letter of
recommendation from a business or organization willing to assume financial
responsibility for you.
- The fee, in money order, certified check, travel agency check, or (by
prior agreement) personal check, payable to "Consulate of Madagascar":
- $33.45 per passport plus courier or postage costs, for a one entry visa.
- $39.01 per passport plus courier or postage costs, for two entries, enabling
you to leave and reenter Madagascar during your trip. A ship calling at several
Malagasy ports makes one entry, unless it stops at a foreign destination in
between.
To send your visa, we recommend using Federal Express. However, you may use at
your discretion another courier service or the US Mail (ordinary, priority,
express, certified, or registered). Your passport bearing the visa is sent back
to you within 24-48 hours. If you come in person with an appointment, the visa
is issued on the spot. The visa can be used any time within the six months from
the date of issue; it expires is not used within that time.
Long-term visas (more than one month) are issued by the Embassy in
Washington, DC.
A long-term visa requires authorization from Antananarivo, which takes
generally at least two months. Call or write to obtain five yellow application
forms, then mail to the Embassy the following documents:
- Your passport (valid for at least one year).
- The five yellow forms completed and signed.
- Five passport photographs.
- A letter of recommendation (usually) from the organization sponsoring the trip.
- A complete resume, with particular emphasis on previous employment
experience and extra-curricular activities.
- The fee, in cash, certified check or money order payable to the Embassy
of Madagascar:
- $50.14 plus postage for a stay of more than a month and less than three
years.
- $72.40 plus postage for a stay exceeding three years.
